Keith Hufnagel: From New York Streets to San Francisco Skate Icon

Keith Hufnagel grew up in New York City during the 1980s, immersed in a world of skateboarding, hip-hop, graffiti, and punk culture. These early influences shaped his style and creative outlook. As his skateboarding career progressed, Keith relocated to San Francisco in 1992, a city quickly becoming one of the most important skate destinations in the world.

The First HUF Store in San Francisco

In 2002, Keith Hufnagel opened the first HUF boutique in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. At the time, there were very few spaces that truly blended skateboarding and emerging streetwear culture. Keith saw an opportunity to create something different.

The original HUF shop carried hard-to-find sneakers and brands like Supreme and Stüssy, while also showcasing skate decks and art. It wasn’t just a retail store — it became a cultural hub for skaters, artists, musicians, and creatives throughout the Bay Area.

The nickname “HUF,” already widely used within the skate community, became the store’s identity. Word spread quickly, and the shop gained national recognition for its curated selection and authentic vibe.

From Local Skate Shop to Global Streetwear Brand

As demand grew, HUF expanded from a boutique retailer into its own streetwear and skate apparel brand. Keith began designing collections that reflected his roots: clean graphics, bold logos, workwear influences, and skate-ready functionality.

HUF clothing quickly gained traction beyond San Francisco. Collaborations with major footwear brands and artists helped push the label onto the global stage. What started in the Tenderloin evolved into an internationally recognized name in skate and street fashion.

Despite global growth, HUF never abandoned its core values — independence, creativity, and authenticity.

Keith Hufnagel’s Legacy

Keith Hufnagel passed away in 2020, but his influence remains deeply woven into skateboarding and streetwear culture. HUF continues to honor his vision by staying true to its roots while evolving with new generations of skaters and creatives.
